Stoneleigh Coronation Lodge No. 5699 – A Proud History
Our Origins
Consecrated in 1937, Stoneleigh Coronation Lodge takes its name from the Coronation of His Majesty King George VI, Past Grand Master, held that same year. From the beginning, the Lodge showed remarkable enthusiasm and commitment—initiating thirteen candidates and welcoming three joining members in just its first two years.
Even the outbreak of the Second World War did not halt its progress. The Installation Meeting of January 1940 drew fifty-five members, including the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W. Bro. Lieut-Col. H.A. Mann, O.B.E., M.C. Under the mastership of founder W. Bro. W.H. Pease, meetings continued despite wartime hardships and air raids.
In February 1940, W. Bro. Pease presented the Lodge Banner, dedicated by R.W. Bro. Canon J.C. Morris, M.A., Provincial Grand Master. The Banner—described as one “of magnificence and splendour”—displays the names of every Master since the Lodge’s formation.
Post-War Growth and Expansion
Despite members being called to active service, the Lodge grew steadily, numbering around sixty brethren by the war’s end. In 1943, Stoneleigh Coronation sponsored the petition to create Staneway Lodge No. 5872, which served proudly until 2009.
The spirit of expansion continued in 1959 with the founding of Stoneleigh Park Lodge No. 7659, whose fifteen founders were members of Stoneleigh Coronation Lodge. That same year, the Founder’s Jewel of W. Bro. Buckenham was presented to the Grand Lodge Museum, where it remains displayed today.
The Lodge’s 25th Anniversary was celebrated in style on 1st December 1962 at the Stoneleigh Inn, attended by ninety-three brethren under W. Bro. Ambrose Channer. Two years later, members helped establish Stoneleigh Coronation Chapter No. 5699, extending their companionship into the Royal Arch. In 1968, another daughter Lodge, Star of Stoneleigh, was consecrated.
Moving Forward
By 1977, the Lodge had outgrown its long-standing home at the Stoneleigh Inn and moved to Sutton Masonic Hall, where it still meets today. Over the years, meeting days evolved from Mondays to Saturdays—a tradition that continues to suit the Lodge’s members well.
The Golden Jubilee in 1987 marked another milestone, celebrated under the leadership of W. Bro. Vivian Brunt. The initiation of a Lewis during the ceremony, attended by seventy-eight brethren, symbolised the Lodge’s vitality and optimism for the future.
The Last 25 Years
The modern era has brought change and challenge. Like many Lodges, Stoneleigh Coronation saw a temporary decline in new initiates, influenced by work patterns, social change, and misconceptions about Freemasonry. Yet, through dedication and unity, the Lodge remains strong and active.
Several members have achieved more than four decades of service—W. Bros. H.F.S. Bromley, D.A. Pilgrim, D.R. Miller, P.J. Durrant, and M.W. Jordan—with others, including W. Bros. J.P. Smith and R. Low, exceeding thirty years. Their guidance continues to enrich the Lodge today.
Special mention is due to two outstanding brethren:

W. Bro. J. Creedon, Treasurer for twenty-three years and a Mason for over fifty, whose commitment and meticulous stewardship endured until his passing in 2025.

W. Bro. D. Gladwell, Secretary for twelve years, whose diligence and humour ensure the Lodge’s efficient and happy running.
Today and the Future
Stoneleigh Coronation Lodge remains an active, welcoming, and forward-looking Lodge. A well-attended Lodge of Instruction ensures the quality of ritual, while regular social gatherings foster friendship and introduce potential new members.
Thanks to the collective effort of its brethren, membership has stabilised, enthusiasm remains high, and newer members are learning from the wisdom of their elders.
As we look forward to the next twenty-five years, Stoneleigh Coronation Lodge stands firmly rooted in the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth—honouring its history while shaping its future.
We meet at Sutton Masonic Hall, Grove Road, Sutton on the fourth Saturday in February (Installation). The second Saturday in June, the fourth Saturday in October and the first Saturday in December.
